# What certifications should a safe sanitary pad have in India?

Certifications on a sanitary pad are not just labels. They indicate whether the product has been independently tested for chemical safety, material quality, and manufacturing standards. In India, where the market includes both mass-market and premium options, knowing which certifications to look for helps you evaluate products beyond marketing language.

## The certifications that matter most

**BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) IS 5405 certification** is the most relevant Indian standard for sanitary napkins. It covers absorbency, pH levels, and basic safety requirements. A pad that meets IS 5405 has been tested against a defined national benchmark for performance and hygiene.

**OEKO-TEX Standard 100** is an internationally recognised certification that tests textiles and materials for harmful substances, including pesticides, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and certain dyes. For a sanitary pad, this certification on the top sheet or core materials is a meaningful signal that the materials touching your skin have been independently screened.

**ISO certifications on the manufacturing facility** (commonly ISO 9001 for quality management or ISO 13485 for medical device manufacturing) indicate that the factory producing the pad follows documented, audited processes. This matters because even good materials can be compromised by inconsistent manufacturing.

**Chlorine-free processing claims backed by third-party testing** are worth verifying separately. Chlorine bleaching of absorbent materials can leave trace dioxins. Brands that use elemental chlorine-free (ECF) or totally chlorine-free (TCF) processes and can point to test reports offer stronger safety assurance than those making the claim without documentation.

**Dermatologist-tested claims** are common but vary in rigour. A pad described as dermatologist-tested should ideally come with information about what was tested, on whom, and under what conditions. A patch test on a small panel is very different from a clinical study, so it is worth asking the brand for specifics if this claim is central to your decision.

## What certifications do not cover

Certifications confirm that a product met a standard at the time of testing. They do not guarantee that every batch is identical, that the formulation has not changed, or that the pad will work the same way for every body.

If you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions, certifications are a useful starting filter, but they work best alongside checking the actual ingredient and material list. The [ingredients and materials in a pad designed for sensitive skin](/sanitary-pad-safe-for-sensitive-skin-ingredients) give you a more granular picture of what is actually in contact with your skin.

## What to check when a brand does not display certifications clearly

Some brands hold valid certifications but do not display them prominently. Before assuming a product is uncertified, it is reasonable to:

- Check the product packaging for certification marks or standard numbers
- Look at the brand's website for a dedicated safety or transparency page
- Contact the brand directly and ask which certifications apply to the specific product, not just the company
- Ask whether the certifications cover the finished product or only individual raw materials

A brand that is confident in its safety profile will typically be able to answer these questions without hesitation.

## How certifications connect to material choices

Certifications and materials are closely linked. A pad with a pure cotton top sheet is more likely to qualify for OEKO-TEX certification than one built on synthetic layers, because cotton can be tested and traced more cleanly through the supply chain. Pads that are free from artificial fragrances, chlorine processing, and pesticide residues are also easier to certify because there are fewer chemical inputs to screen.

If you are comparing pad types or formats, such as regular pads versus panty liners, the same certification questions apply to both. You can read more about how the two formats differ and when each is appropriate in [this guide on panty liners versus sanitary pads](/what-is-the-difference-between-a-panty-liner-and-a-sanitary-pad-and-when-do-you-use-each).

## A practical summary

| Certification or standard | What it checks | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| BIS IS 5405 | Absorbency, pH, basic hygiene | Packaging or brand website |
| OEKO-TEX Standard 100 | Harmful substances in materials | OEKO-TEX public database |
| ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 | Manufacturing quality and consistency | Brand transparency page or direct inquiry |
| Chlorine-free processing | Absence of dioxin-linked bleaching | Third-party test reports from the brand |
| Dermatologist-tested | Skin compatibility under test conditions | Ask the brand for test scope and methodology |

No single certification covers everything. The strongest signal of a safe pad is a combination of relevant certifications, a transparent ingredient list, and a brand that can explain both clearly.
